Official Visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (April & May 2018)
Following Special Rapporteur Achiume’s official country visit to The United Kingdom, this report examines racial equality in the United Kingdom. It highlights areas of leadership in areas like the Race Disparity Audit and robust legal frameworks under the Equality Act 2010. Nonetheless, significant disparities persist, particularly affecting racial and ethnic minorities in housing, education, health, and employment. Key issues include the disproportionate impact of austerity policies, gaps in protections under the Equality Act in Northern Ireland, and the racialized effects of counter-terrorism and immigration laws. The report also critiques the fragmented approach to anti-racism policies across devolved nations and raises concerns about Brexit potentially reducing human rights protections. Recommendations emphasize adopting a comprehensive national strategy for racial equality, addressing structural and intersectional discrimination, and ensuring targeted measures to address disparities in outcomes for marginalized communities.
